2014 sees the 40th anniversary of the release of Rick Wakeman’s landmark concept album, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth (1974) based on the novel by Jules Verne.
Rick Wakeman and The Jules Verne Symphony Orchestra will celebrate this anniversary with a state of the art, dramatic, live arena presentation of this epochal, classical-rock crossover work touring the world. The first ‘Journey To The Centre Of The Earth’ dates to be announced this week are in the UK:
29/04/2014 Birmingham, Nia
30/04/2014 London, Royal Albert Hall
01/05/2014 Glasgow, Glasgow
03/05/2014 Bournemouth, Bournemouth Intl
04/05/2014 Bournemouth, Cardiff Arena
Designed by Roger Dean, the creative mastermind behind the distinctive artwork of million-selling albums by Yes and Uriah Heep, 'Journey To The Centre Of The Earth' is a must-see show, a thrilling spectacle for all the family, to rival blockbuster presentations like Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of the Worlds and Roger Waters’ touring production of Pink Floyd’s The Wall.
In 2012 the wizard of keyboards re-released the album in a new super delux version. For more than 30 years, the original conductor's score for Journey To The Centre Of The Earth was thought to have been lost, making any attempt to revive this seminal work impossible. However, in 2008, Wakeman took delivery of a box that arrived out of the blue from Australia. At the bottom, he found the original Journey To The Centre Of The Earth conductor’s score that had suffered serious water damage. With the help of conductor and musicologist Guy Protheroe, he repaired and revisited the documented compositions and put them in a form that enabled him to celebrate its anniversary in an appropriate manner. Engaging the Jules Verne Symphony Orchestra and Choir as well as actor Peter Egan, (whose work has spanned every genre from the RSC to Alan Bennett’s “People” and comedy as the role of Paul in the British sitcom Ever Decreasing Circles), he recorded a 55 minute version of Journey To The Centre Of The Earth at London's famed Abbey Road Studios. In November 2012, the expanded work was published as a limited edition a fan-pack, together with a copy of the 1974 Royal Festival Hall concert programme, and instantly became a collector's item.
